Donald Trump’s jibe at Khamenei’s funeral in Iran: “We gave Iran a one-week reprieve”

July 04, 2026

New Delhi: The week-long state funeral proceedings for Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—who was killed in a joint US-Israel strike—have begun. A somber atmosphere prevails across the country as people bid farewell to their leader with teary eyes. Amidst this, US President Donald Trump took a dig at Tehran, stating that the US granted Iran a week for the funeral because Washington is a “good” country.

Khamenei died on February 28—the day the conflict between the US/Israel and Iran began. He was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike. Several of his family members also perished in the attack, including his daughter, son-in-law, newborn granddaughter, and daughter-in-law.

  • As Iran bids farewell to its former Supreme Leader, Trump has once again grabbed headlines with his remarks. Addressing a large gathering at Mount Rushmore ahead of the US Independence Day celebrations, Trump referred to the recent conflict with Iran and justified his administration’s military action.

Addressing the crowd, Trump said, “We devastated Iran. They are desperate to make a deal. They want to reconcile very badly. We gave them a one-week reprieve for the funeral because we are good people.” Trump’s comments drew loud applause and scattered laughter from the crowd.

It is worth noting that Khamenei had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for several decades. He died during the initial phase of the conflict between the US/Israel and Iran. The loss of multiple family members in the attack made the tragedy even more painful. It is evident from President Trump’s statement that the US continues to maintain a tough stance regarding a potential war with Iran and is not shying away from deriding hopes for a deal.
