Love, 7 Bighas of Land and a Murder: The Chilling Story Behind MSc Student Shreya’s Killing in Varanasi

Varanasi: A shocking murder has exposed a disturbing tale allegedly involving love, greed, property and revenge. The blood-soaked body of 22-year-old MSc student Shreya, also known as Monu, was discovered inside the bathroom of a rented room in Varanasi’s Rohaniya area on August 20.

Shreya had reportedly been missing since August 18, following which her family lodged a missing-person complaint at Rajatalab police station. Police suspect that her distant relative, Vivek Chaubey, abducted and allegedly murdered her after she refused to marry him. Investigators are also probing the alleged role of a seven-bigha family property in the crime.

The 7-Bigha Property That Allegedly Became the Motive
According to Shreya’s family, she was the only daughter and was expected to inherit around seven bighas of land. The family alleges that Vivek had his eyes on the property and believed that marrying Shreya would eventually give him control over it. When Shreya refused to marry him, he allegedly pressured and threatened her. Her family claims that her decision to marry someone else ultimately intensified his anger.

Marriage Fixed in Mirzapur, Accused Allegedly Enraged
Shreya’s marriage had reportedly been arranged with a family in Mirzapur. Her ring ceremony was scheduled for November 22, while the wedding was planned for February 26. According to the family, Vivek became furious after learning about the marriage plans. On August 18, he allegedly intercepted Shreya while she was on her way to college, abducted her and took her to a rented room in Bachhawn, where she was allegedly killed with a sharp-edged weapon.

Body Found Two Days Later
After the alleged murder, Vivek reportedly locked the room and fled to his maternal grandparents’ home in Bhuwalpur, Mirzapur. He allegedly left his motorcycle, bag and the room key there before disappearing. When police later opened the locked room using the key, they discovered Shreya’s body inside the bathroom. Police said the body appeared to have been there for around two days.

Four Police Teams Searching for Main Suspect
DCP (Gomti Zone) Neetu Katyayan said four police teams have been deployed to track down the absconding accused. Meanwhile, police have detained the landlord and Vivek’s father for questioning as investigators try to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether anyone else was involved. The case has left Shreya’s family devastated, while police continue their search for Vivek and investigate the alleged links between the murder, the failed marriage and the disputed property.
