Reminded Munir of the 1971 defeat… Maulana warns again of Pakistan’s potential breakup

New Delhi: Prominent Pakistani religious and political leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has once again targeted Army Chief Asim Munir. Comparing Pakistan’s current situation to the events of 1971, he questioned the military’s claims of strength. His statement clearly reflected apprehensions regarding the disintegration of Pakistan and alterations to its geographical boundaries.

Fazlur Rehman acknowledged that the army and its leadership possess power, but emphasized that history cannot be forgotten. Referencing December 1971, he noted that just a day before surrendering to India, General Yahya Khan had addressed the Pakistani public, declaring that the army would fight in every street, field, and mountain. Yet, the very next day, the Pakistani army laid down its arms.

The Pakistani Maulana remarked, “We have heard such tall claims in the past as well.” Fazlur Rehman questioned why the people of Pakistan, already grappling with immense hardships, are being subjected to further difficulties.

Mention of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The Maulana also expressed concern over the situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing conditions in these regions as war-like, with bloodshed continuing unabated. He also highlighted the long-standing protests in Rawalakot (in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir), noting that while people have been protesting for nearly three months, there has been no dialogue with them. Fazlur Rehman warned that such a situation could empower elements seeking secession.

‘What is the objective—to break up the country?’
Fazlur Rehman questioned the underlying objective of the current situation. He observed that prolonged bloodshed in a region could signal future geographical changes. Citing the conflict in Afghanistan that has persisted since 1979, he noted that the entire region has been witnessing bloodshed for approximately 45 to 46 years. He stated that Pakistan should clarify its intentions to the public.

This statement by Fazlur Rehman comes at a time when security and political challenges persist in several parts of Pakistan. His remarks regarding 1971 and geographical changes have sparked a new political debate for Pakistan’s military and government.
