US-Iran Tensions Escalate Again, Crude Oil Prices Surge Past $90

August 31, 2026

New Delhi: Tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified once again, raising fresh concerns over global energy supplies. A series of attacks around the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a sharp reaction in international crude oil markets.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, with a significant share of global petroleum supplies passing through it. Reports of a US strike on an Iranian island were followed by retaliatory action from Tehran, escalating fears of a wider regional conflict.

Crude Oil Crosses $90 Per Barrel
International crude oil prices jumped sharply following the latest developments. Brent crude rose around 3% and crossed the $90-per-barrel mark again.

At the time of reporting, Brent crude was trading at approximately $90.15 per barrel, while WTI crude stood at around $85.20. Murban crude also gained more than 4%, reaching approximately $95.75 per barrel.

The sudden rise reflects growing concerns that prolonged tensions could disrupt oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

  • How Long Will the Conflict Continue?
According to a Reuters report, crude prices accelerated after news emerged of the latest US-Iran confrontation. Analysts warned that the situation could remain unpredictable.

IG Markets analyst Tony Sycamore said the latest developments appeared to represent another phase of escalating tensions, adding that it was difficult to predict whether the situation would last for days or weeks.

    Global Markets on Alert
The latest escalation has renewed concerns about a prolonged period of high oil prices. Previous disruptions and heightened tensions in the region have pushed crude prices sharply higher, affecting economies around the world.

A sustained disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could have consequences far beyond the Middle East. Countries heavily dependent on imported crude, including India, could face higher energy and transportation costs if international oil prices remain elevated.

How Will Rising Crude Prices Affect the Common Man?
Higher international crude prices can eventually affect consumers through several channels. For India, expensive crude means a larger import bill and greater demand for US dollars to pay for energy imports.

Higher fuel costs can also increase transportation and logistics expenses, which may eventually push up the prices of everyday goods and services.

India imports a large portion of its crude oil requirements, making international oil prices an important factor for the domestic economy. If crude remains elevated for an extended period, the pressure could be felt through petrol and diesel prices, transportation costs, inflation and household expenses.

For consumers, the key concern now is whether the US-Iran tensions remain limited or develop into a broader disruption to oil supplies. A prolonged crisis in and around the Strait of Hormuz could put further upward pressure on global crude prices.
