Peace initiatives for the Ukraine-Russia conflict begin; US steps up involvement following PM Modi’s appeal to Putin

New Delhi. Efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine appear to be gaining momentum once again. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that US negotiators, who are working to pave the way for a potential peace agreement with Russia, may visit both Ukraine and Russia in the coming days.

In a video address, Zelenskyy stated that tentative dates have been set for the visit of the US President’s representatives to Ukraine. He noted that the US representatives are scheduled to hold meetings in both Moscow and Kyiv. Zelenskyy emphasized the significant importance of these upcoming meetings.

PM Modi appeals to President Putin to end the war
This increased activity by US negotiators follows direct talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict. The two leaders held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

During the meeting, PM Modi highlighted the humanitarian impact of the conflict, noting that perpetual warfare holds humanity back. He urged the world to move beyond “never-ending wars” and work towards bringing the conflict to a close. PM Modi also asserted that problems cannot be resolved on the battlefield. India reiterated its support for efforts aimed at achieving a diplomatic and peaceful resolution.

Putin ready to end the war following PM Modi’s appeal
Following PM Modi’s appeal, Putin also publicly stated his position regarding peace. He affirmed that Russia is prepared to end the war and establish lasting peace rather than merely agreeing to a temporary ceasefire. Putin further added that Moscow is open to dialogue with all parties wishing to participate in the peace process. However, Russia has also made it clear that any resolution must take its core strategic interests into account.

Now, following reports of visits by US negotiators to Kyiv and Moscow, a fresh wave of activity regarding peace efforts has begun. These upcoming meetings could clarify the path toward resolving the Russia-Ukraine war.
