How Much Prize Money Will Navi Pillay Receive?
The Nobel Peace Prize is the fifth Nobel award to be announced this week, following the prizes for Literature, Chemistry, Physics and Medicine. As the 2026 laureate, Pillay is set to receive prize money of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately ₹11.66 crore. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Oslo on December 10.
In 2025, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
From Apartheid-Era Struggles to the International Stage
Born on December 23, 1941, into a Tamil family of Indian origin in South Africa, Navi Pillay built a distinguished career as a lawyer and judge. During the apartheid era, she challenged racial discrimination and represented political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, according to the report.
Pillay made history by becoming the first non-white woman to serve as a judge of South Africa’s High Court, breaking significant racial and gender barriers in the country’s judicial system.
Her contributions extended beyond South Africa. From 2008 to 2014, she served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, where she worked on international human rights issues and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
Her reported recognition with the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize highlights a career spanning decades of legal service, the struggle against apartheid and efforts to strengthen international justice.
