New Delhi. During ‘Operation Sindoor,’ the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted precision strikes across a 1,200-kilometer-wide and 200-kilometer-deep area along the western front. This demonstrated that no target lies beyond the reach of the Air Force. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh stated this on Sunday—a remark being interpreted as a warning to Pakistan.
The Air Chief Marshal noted that ‘Operation Sindoor’ validated the Air Force’s capability-based strategy. The operation underscored that air power is the most critical response capability and a primary instrument of strategic deterrence for the nation’s security. However, he cautioned that the success of this operation should not lead to any complacency in the Air Force’s ongoing preparations; rather, the focus must remain on further expanding and strengthening these capabilities for the future.
What did the Air Chief Marshal say about ‘theaterization’?
Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh clarified that the objective of ‘theaterization’ is not to permanently divide combat aircraft based on specific geographical zones. In an interview with the news agency PTI, he affirmed that the Indian Air Force remains fully committed to the process of joint operations and integration across the three branches of the armed forces.
AP Singh explained that future conflicts will, by their very nature, be multi-domain—fought across several theaters simultaneously. Consequently, the Army, Navy, and Air Force will need to operate with a level of coordination far closer than what has been seen in the past.
‘Optimizing the use of air power within an integrated framework is essential’
Discussing ‘theaterization,’ the Air Chief Marshal emphasized that the core question is how to ensure the most effective and optimal application of air power within an integrated military framework. He stated that the guiding principle for this should be to maintain control at the central level where necessary, while decentralizing the responsibility for taking action where appropriate.
‘Avoid making definitive predictions about the future battlefield’
Amar Preet Singh remarked that when developing future military structures, one must avoid the assumption that the nature of the future battlefield can be understood with absolute certainty in advance. He emphasized that India’s military framework should be evaluated based on the nation’s own security requirements, rather than by emulating models from other countries.
