What will Trump do if the meeting goes bad?
The White House had earlier tried to lower expectations by calling this meeting just a ‘listening exercise’, but Trump has raised expectations about it. He also indicated that his goal is to move towards a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky. In which discussions are being held at three different locations. However, Trump clarified that he will take further steps based on the outcome of the meeting. He said that if the meeting goes bad, I will not call anyone, I will go straight home. But if it goes well, I will call President Zelensky and European leaders.
When asked if he would give economic incentives to Russia in the meeting, Trump refused to reveal. He said that I do not want to reveal my cards publicly, but whatever cards I have (economic incentives, and maybe some disincentives too) can be very important.
