Bank Strike Today: Operations Halted, Know the Situation at Private Banks and Important Details

January 27, 2026

New Delhi. If you have any urgent banking work today, read this news before leaving for the branch, lest you arrive only to find it closed. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a nationwide strike on January 27, and this could directly impact banking operations. Due to this strike, services such as deposits and withdrawals, and customer service at branches may be affected. Amidst this inconvenience, you can easily complete some of your essential banking tasks from home. Let’s find out how?

Why the bank unions’ strike?
Banking operations across the country may be affected on Tuesday, as the United Forum of Bank Unions has decided to go on a nationwide strike on January 27. Their demand is that the 5-day work week rule should be implemented immediately, allowing bank employees two days off.

  • According to the bank unions, several rounds of discussions have been held with the central government and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) on this issue, but no concrete decision has been taken regarding their demands so far. The unions say that a work-life balance is necessary in banks, just like in other government departments, and the 5-day work week system should be implemented.

Announcement on January 23, these services affected
It is noteworthy that the United Forum of Bank Unions is the main body of 9 unions. On January 23, the union held a meeting with the Chief Labour Commissioner regarding their demand for a five-day work week, but after no solution was reached, they announced a nationwide strike.

Regarding the services that will be affected by this strike, there may be disruptions in services ranging from depositing cash to withdrawing money at bank branches. In addition, the strike could impact customer service at branches, as well as work related to bank loans and other documentation.

How to handle banking tasks from home
Usually, during festivals, events, or weekly holidays when banks are closed, many essential banking tasks are handled from home through online banking, and this can be used even after Tuesday’s strike. Online services are available 24/7, and online transactions can be completed very easily. All government and private banks provide this facility to their customers. Furthermore, this strike is not expected to affect bank ATMs or the UPI system.

Moreover, the operations of other private banks, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, are also unlikely to be affected, as employees of these private banks are not participating in the bank union strike.
