Bhopal: Now, even enemy aircraft will be undetectable at Bhopal Airport. The Airport Authority is installing a state-of-the-art Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar System (MSSR). This radar will allow aircraft flying at altitudes up to 60,000 feet to be scanned. This will facilitate monitoring of regular and international flights, ensuring no aircraft will escape radar detection.
Typically, aircraft fly at altitudes of 30,000 to 40,000 feet, while international flights reach 50,000 to 60,000 feet. Higher altitudes make communication with the air traffic control room difficult. The new radar will allow even high-altitude aircraft to be tracked immediately. If an enemy aircraft approaches, it will indicate which aircraft is traveling in which direction.
A new building has been constructed near the ATC to house the Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar. The radar has been imported from Norway and brought to Bhopal. It will be installed soon, and trials will be completed by December. The radar will be fully operational by the New Year. This radar will make it easier to provide guidance to flight crews in case of an emergency, and to transmit data to headquarters in Nagpur and Delhi.
Airport Director Ramji Awasthi stated that the radar will allow for instantaneous tracking of aircraft positions, speed, and altitude. The new system is based on cutting-edge technology. Now, every aircraft will be within radar range, making air traffic management easier and safer. This step is considered significant given Bhopal’s geographical location.
