Delhi HC Rejects 15 Pleas Seeking FIRs, SIT Probe Into Alleged Hate Speeches Linked to Delhi Riots

October 05, 2026

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has dismissed 15 petitions seeking the registration of FIRs and investigations into alleged inflammatory and hate speeches linked to the 2019 Jamia violence and the North-East Delhi riots of February 2020.

The petitions sought legal action against several political leaders, including Kapil Mishra, Parvesh Verma and Anurag Thakur, among others. The pleas were filed by petitioners across the political spectrum and also named leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Manish Sisodia and Akbaruddin Owaisi.

  • The petitioners had alleged that statements and speeches made by various political leaders warranted investigation into their purported role in the events surrounding the 2020 Delhi riots. They also sought directions to the police for registration of FIRs and requested an Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the allegations.

The pleas further raised questions concerning police action, investigations and arrests related to the violence.

In its ruling, the Delhi High Court dismissed all 15 petitions, rejecting the requests for FIRs and an SIT investigation into the alleged hate speeches.

The dismissal means that the specific reliefs sought through these petitions—including directions for registration of FIRs against the named political leaders and an SIT probe—were not granted by the court.
