Washington. US President Donald Trump’s new claim has shocked the world. Trump says that Pakistan is testing nuclear weapons. He said that Russia and China are also testing nuclear weapons, necessitating the US to resume nuclear testing. Trump also claimed that the US possesses enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 150 times, but that testing is necessary due to Russia and China’s activities. However, Trump’s statement that has shocked all of South Asia is his mention of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons test.
Different policies regarding nuclear weapons
Both India and Pakistan possess nuclear weapons, and when tensions escalate between the two countries, the world’s attention is focused on India and Pakistan’s nuclear arsenals. However, India and Pakistan have different policies regarding nuclear weapons. Pakistan’s policy is to use nuclear weapons first if it perceives a threat to its security. This is called the “No First Use Policy.”
Although India’s policy is not to use nuclear weapons first, when war broke out between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Pakistan surrendered within four days in the face of Operation Sindoor. India not only destroyed nine terrorist bases in Pakistan but also destroyed eleven airbases. Defeated in the war with India, Pakistan fell directly into the lap of the United States.
India will also have to prepare for a “two-front war.”
Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif both met with Trump. Now, Donald Trump has made a major claim about Pakistan. Trump has said that North Korea, Russia, China, and Pakistan are testing nuclear weapons. Now, if both of India’s neighbors, China and Pakistan, are testing nuclear weapons, the situation becomes extremely serious.
If our neighbors are plotting a major plan, it’s crucial for India to be fully prepared so that if a two-front war ever arises in the future, it can be effectively countered. If Trump’s claims are true, Pakistan should also be aware of this: In response to Pakistan’s nuclear test, India could directly test a hydrogen bomb.
Pakistan fears India’s hydrogen bomb
Pakistan also fears this. A hydrogen bomb is far more lethal and destructive than an atomic bomb. Former Pakistani ambassador Abdul Basit has warned that India may soon test a new thermonuclear bomb. In 1998, India conducted five nuclear tests in Pokhran, one of which was reported to be thermonuclear. Seventeen days later, Pakistan also conducted six tests. A nuclear balance was established between the two countries at that time, but if India conducts another test, this balance could be disrupted again.
Donald Trump’s claim has disturbed Pakistan’s sleep. The US itself has hinted at resuming nuclear testing, which could give India an excuse. If the US openly conducts tests, India can claim it is doing so in its own security interests. Now, out of fear, the people of Pakistan are cursing Trump. Pakistan has not conducted a nuclear test since 1998.
Who has how many nuclear weapons?
According to recent reports, India has 180 nuclear weapons, while China has 600. It is working to increase this number to 1,000 by 2030. Pakistan, on the other hand, has 170 nuclear weapons. According to the American think tank Federation of American Scientists, Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program was initiated in 1972 by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who served as both President and Prime Minister of Pakistan. Following India’s first nuclear test in 1974, then-Pakistani Prime Minister Bhutto immediately stated in a press conference that “the Indian subcontinent is no longer safe, and Pakistan must become a nuclear power.”
According to the Federation of American Scientists, Pakistan surpassed the production limit for weapons-grade uranium in 1985. However, on May 28, 1998, Pakistan officially announced that it had conducted five successful nuclear tests. These tests produced a seismic tremor of magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale, and the total explosive yield was estimated to be approximately 40 kilotons of TNT equivalent.
Many Indian strategic experts believe that if the United States, Russia, and China resume their tests, India has a window to retest its hydrogen bomb and test warheads for new, more powerful, and smaller missiles.
