Double Whammy of Inflation: After Petrol and Diesel, CNG Prices Also Rise by ₹2 Per Kg

New Delhi: Following petrol and diesel, the prices of CNG in Delhi have now also been hiked. Effective from 6:00 AM today, the price of CNG has been increased by ₹2 per kg. According to the new rates, CNG in Delhi now stands at ₹83.09 per kg. The primary reason cited for this sudden hike is the rising domestic costs driven by the global oil and gas crisis.

Prior to this, CNG prices had already been hiked twice in recent days. In total, an increase of ₹6 per kg has been recorded over the last 12 days. This marks the fourth instance in the last 12 days where CNG prices in Delhi-NCR have been raised following a hike in petrol and diesel rates. On May 23, the price of CNG was increased by ₹1. Much like petrol and diesel, CNG is now also becoming a heavy burden on the common man’s pocket.

Timeline of Price Hikes

Following the surge in petrol and diesel prices, the price of CNG was increased by ₹2 per kg on May 15. Just two days later, on May 17, oil and gas marketing companies hiked the price of CNG by ₹1 per kg; subsequently, on May 23, the price was raised by another ₹1 per kg. Now, once again today, the price of CNG has been increased by ₹2 per kg.

This latest hike of ₹2 per kg in CNG prices is expected to hit commercial vehicle operators in Delhi the hardest. CNG is predominantly used in auto-rickshaws, taxis, school vans, and private cars across Delhi-NCR. Auto-rickshaw drivers state that these frequent price hikes are adversely impacting their daily earnings. Auto and taxi unions have expressed that the rising operational costs have made it extremely difficult to sustain their livelihoods, a situation that could potentially lead to an increase in passenger fares and freight charges in the coming days.
