DRDO Successfully Tests Drone-Launched Precision-Guided Missile V-3

May 20, 2026

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation has achieved another significant milestone. The DRDO has successfully completed the final developmental trials of a precision-guided missile designated as the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Launched Precision Guided Missile-V3. These trials were conducted at the DRDO test range near Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The missile has been successfully tested in both modes—air-to-ground and air-to-air.

What is the ULPGM-V3 Missile?
The ULPGM-V3 is an indigenously developed precision-guided missile capable of being launched from a drone (UAV). This missile can precisely target and destroy enemy tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, other drones, and aerial targets. It is a high-technology missile capable of executing highly precise strikes. During the trials, an advanced ground control system was utilized, featuring capabilities for automatic readiness and launch, which facilitates easy control of the missile.

  • Which Organizations Developed It?
This missile was developed under the leadership of the Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat. Additionally, other DRDO laboratories—the Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad, the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh, and the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory in Pune—also contributed to its development. For production, partnerships have been established with two major companies: Bharat Dynamics Limited in Hyderabad and Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited in Hyderabad. UAVs provided by the Bengaluru-based company, NewSpace Research and Technologies, were utilized for the trials.

    Completely Indigenous and Self-Reliant
The DRDO states that the entire development and production of this missile have taken place within the Indian defense ecosystem. A large number of MSMEs, as well as small and large Indian companies, participated in this endeavor. The trials have conclusively demonstrated that India is now fully prepared to undertake the mass production of this missile.

The ULPGM-V3 missile will prove to be highly beneficial for the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy. Being a drone-launched weapon, it will provide the capability to destroy enemy targets from a distance without placing soldiers at risk.

This missile will be particularly effective in counter-terrorism operations, border strikes, and modern warfare scenarios. This achievement places India among the select few nations capable of developing UAV-launched precision missiles. Furthermore, it will reduce dependence on foreign imports and enhance prospects for defense exports.
