New Delhi. China on Wednesday organized its largest military parade ever in Tiananmen. The event was organized to mark 80 years of the end of World War II. The parade began at 9 am (6:45 AM Indian time) and is considered a demonstration of China’s military strength and future.
President Xi Jinping welcomed several foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. These leaders are generally considered to be from countries opposed to the US.
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) gave an organized demonstration of its modern military capability in this parade. It included weapons like drones, hypersonic missiles and fighter jets. Hundreds of PLA aircraft also became part of this parade. 45 military contingents landed on Tiananmen Square and saluted President Xi Jinping. The parade is to last for about 70 minutes and Xi Jinping is also likely to address the gathering.
The presence of Putin, Kim and Xi together in Beijing is being considered a direct message to the US and President Donald Trump. Trump has earlier tried to bring Putin and Kim to his side. At the same time, Japan had appealed to world leaders not to attend the event, to which China has lodged a strong diplomatic protest.
Earlier, China had organized the Victory Day parade 10 years ago. This time it has been given a more grand look on the 80th anniversary. A total of 26 foreign leaders were present in the parade.
These included Russia’s Putin, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Iran’s President Masood Pezeshkian, Myanmar’s military chief Min Aung Hlaing, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Mongolia’s President Khurelsukh Ukhna and Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko.

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico and Serbia’s President Alexander Vucic also attended the parade from Europe. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in China by special train and became a part of this parade.

This was a historic moment because after 66 years a North Korean leader participated in China’s military parade. The last time Kim Jong Un’s grandfather Kim Il Sung participated was in 1959.
Tiananmen Square has been decorated in a grand manner. PLA displayed its high-profile modern weapons for the first time and claimed that their capability is equal to that of the US Army. This event is being considered an attempt to show China’s global power and increase Xi Jinping’s credibility.
