Good News: 7th Tanker Carrying 58,000 Metric Tons of LPG from Hormuz Heads for India

April 04, 2026

New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, another Indian LPG tanker—the ‘Green Sanvi’—has crossed the Strait of Hormuz and is proceeding on its course. According to the ship-tracking platform VesselFinder, this marks the seventh Indian LPG carrier to traverse this highly sensitive maritime route since the outbreak of hostilities. Data indicates that the ‘Green Sanvi’ is navigating via the Larak-Qeshm channel, a route within the Strait of Hormuz considered to be relatively safer.

The vessel has kept its Automatic Identification System (AIS) active, allowing its location to be continuously tracked. The ‘Green Sanvi’ is broadcasting the message “Indian Ship, Indian Crew” in its destination signal—a strategy recently adopted by Indian vessels to mitigate potential risks, thereby safeguarding them against the threat of attacks or misidentification. Meanwhile, two other LPG tankers, named ‘Jag Vikram’ and ‘Green Asha’, remain stranded near the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Both vessels were previously sighted in close proximity to the ‘Green Sanvi’. However, while the ‘Green Sanvi’ has commenced its onward journey, these two vessels continue to hold their positions. This suggests that they have not yet received clearance to proceed, likely due to security or operational considerations. Prior to this, six other LPG tankers—including the ‘Shivalik’, ‘Nanda Devi’, ‘Jag Vasant’, ‘BW Tyre’, ‘BW Elm’, and ‘Pine Gas’—have successfully and safely reached the Indian coast.

With a carrying capacity of approximately 58,811 metric tons, the ‘Green Sanvi’ falls into the category of large LPG carriers—vessels of critical importance in meeting India’s energy requirements. According to reports, at least 15 Indian vessels—laden with oil and gas—remain stranded to the west of the Strait of Hormuz. No information has yet emerged regarding which port the ‘Green Sanvi’—currently moving towards India after crossing the Strait of Hormuz—is scheduled to call at.

It is worth noting that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime routes, through which approximately 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass. Consequently, any form of tension in this region could impact not only India’s energy supply and prices but those of the entire world. India imports a significant portion of its LPG requirements; as such, the safe arrival of these tankers is of paramount importance for domestic gas supply, price stability, and energy security.
