New Delhi: When India’s largest airline, Indigo, experienced system disruptions, thousands of passengers were left waiting for hours at airports, and many couldn’t reach their destinations. This crisis highlighted a harsh reality: the Indian aviation sector is dominated by a handful of players. But now there’s some good news.
The central government has taken a significant step towards breaking this monopoly and providing better options for passengers. The government has issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to two new airlines, ‘Al Hind Air’ and ‘Fly Express’. This means that in the future, you won’t have to rely on just one or two companies for booking air tickets.
Currently, two major groups dominate the Indian skies: Indigo and the Tata Group (Air India). According to statistics, nearly 90 percent of domestic air travelers use the services of these two groups. Therefore, when there’s a problem with one airline, the entire system is disrupted, and the common man bears the brunt of it.
To mitigate this risk, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has taken action. He stated that the government is encouraging new airlines to promote healthy competition in the market. In the past week, the ministry has met with teams from three new companies. The minister’s move clearly indicates that the government wants to create new options in the market to provide relief to the public from arbitrary fares and flight delays.
The two companies that have received the green light have interesting backgrounds. ‘Al Hind Air’ is part of the Kerala-based Alhind Group, which is already a major name in the travel and tourism sector. ‘Fly Express’ is a Hyderabad-based company with experience in courier and cargo services.
In addition, ‘Shankh Air’ has already received its NOC. Shankh Air plans to connect major cities in Uttar Pradesh, such as Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, and Gorakhpur. This means that connectivity for travelers in smaller cities (Tier-2 and Tier-3) is set to improve in the coming times. Under the government’s ‘UDAN’ scheme, smaller airlines like Star Air and Fly91 are already establishing themselves, and these new players will further boost the sector.
