New Delhi: India’s three armed forces are steadily strengthening in the defense sector. In this context, the largest deal ever is set to be signed between the Indian Ministry of Defense and the German Ministry of Defense. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to visit India. According to Indian Navy sources, during his meeting with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, an agreement may be reached on the joint construction of six new-generation submarines for the Indian Navy’s fleet.
Efforts to Make the Indian Navy Self-reliant
According to information received by News24 from defense sources, this deal between India and Germany will be worth approximately $8 billion. German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will jointly build these submarines. The Indian Navy aims to become fully self-reliant by 2047. This deal will provide a new impetus to the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaigns. According to a senior naval official, the agreement will discuss the construction of Type 214 diesel-electric submarines, which will feature air independent propulsion technology.
How will the Indian Navy benefit from this deal?
Defense experts say this deal will enhance the Indian Navy’s strength. Currently, India has 16 conventional submarines, many of which are over 25 years old, while China has over 70 modern submarines. This deal will not only strengthen the Navy but will also increase employment in the country and benefit Indian defense companies.
