Indian Para-Swimmer Shams Alam Arrested in Japan Over Sexual Harassment Allegations; PCI Considers Lifetime Ban

October 22, 2026

New Delhi: Indian para-swimmer Mohammad Shams Alam Shaikh has come under scrutiny after being accused of sexual harassment and molestation by a female hotel employee in Nagoya, Japan. According to media reports, the complaint led to police action, following which the 40-year-old athlete was sent back to India. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) is reportedly considering disciplinary action, including a possible lifetime ban, pending an investigation.

According to The Times of India, a senior PCI official who was accompanying the Indian contingent in Nagoya confirmed the incident and described the alleged conduct as unacceptable. The official said that athletes representing India internationally are expected to maintain high standards of conduct and that the allegations had caused serious embarrassment to the contingent.

  • PCI Official Calls for Strict Disciplinary Action

The PCI official reportedly advocated a lifetime ban for Shams Alam, stating that the incident had damaged the reputation of the Indian team participating in the Asian Para Games.

However, any final disciplinary decision is expected to follow an investigation into the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

What Happened at the Nagoya Hotel?

According to the media report, the alleged incident took place on Monday at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel, where members of the Indian para-swimming team were staying. The female employee reportedly alleged misconduct while carrying out housekeeping duties in the athlete’s room.

Following the complaint, Japanese police reportedly took Shams Alam to a local police station. The PCI official said that procedures relating to his arrest and appearance before a court had been initiated. The report further stated that intervention by Indian officials resulted in the matter being resolved without proceeding to court.

A written apology was reportedly issued, and Shams Alam was instructed to leave Japan immediately. The Indian delegation also reportedly apologised to the hotel management and the employee who filed the complaint.

The allegations have raised questions about athlete conduct and accountability during international sporting events. The precise legal status of the case and any formal findings have not been independently established in the information available here.

From International Sporting Success to Controversy

Shams Alam has previously achieved notable success in para-swimming. According to World Para Swimming records, he has held the world No. 1 ranking in the men’s 100m butterfly (S5) and 50m breaststroke (SB4) events.

He represented India at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta and won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Reykjavik International Games last year, reportedly setting Indian and Asian records in the process.

His sporting achievements are now overshadowed by the allegations in Japan and the possibility of disciplinary action by the PCI. The committee’s final decision, including whether a lifetime ban will be imposed, remains subject to further investigation.
