New Delhi: Due to protests and tensions, Iran has closed its airspace. Following this, Air India has rerouted its flights. Air India issued a statement saying that, considering the safety of passengers, Air India will use alternative routes instead of flying over Iran, resulting in changes to the routes of several flights. Flights whose routes could not be changed have been canceled. Therefore, Air India has issued guidelines for passengers, advising them to “check the status of their flights on our website before arriving at the airport to avoid any inconvenience.”
Iran Extends Order to Close Airspace for Commercial Flights
Iran extended its order to close its airspace to commercial flights on Thursday morning without explanation, as tensions remain high with the United States over Tehran’s crackdown on nationwide protests. The previous order had closed the airspace for only about two hours. A notice now states that the airspace is expected to remain closed until 7:30 AM local time. The Iranian government has not provided any explanation for its decision to close its airspace.
Iran Threatens US and Israel
Iranian officials indicated on Wednesday that trials and executions would soon follow for suspects detained in the nationwide protests. Iran also threatened retaliation if the United States or Israel interfered in its domestic affairs.
These threats from Iran came as the US advised some troops at a major American military base in Qatar to leave. US President Donald Trump made several statements within the last 24 hours, but it remains unclear what US action against Iran will entail. According to a notice issued to pilots, the Islamic Republic of Iran closed its airspace to commercial flights for several hours on Thursday morning without providing any explanation.
