New Delhi: War is raging on many fronts in the Middle East, in which Israel’s involvement is visible on almost every front. The latest situation is that Israel has intensified attacks in Syria as well. The Israeli army IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) on Wednesday attacked the entry gate of the Syrian Defense Ministry in the Syrian capital Damascus. Israel has been targeting the army of the Islamic-led government of Syria since Monday. Israel started targeting Syrian forces after clashes between local security forces and Druze community fighters in the southern Syrian city of Swaida.
Israel says it is carrying out these attacks to protect the Druze minority from attacks by local soldiers. Security sources in the Syrian Defense Ministry told news agency Reuters that at least two drone attacks have taken place on the ministry building and officers are hiding in the basement. Syrian government news channel Elekbariya TV reported that two civilians were injured in the Israeli attack.
The Israeli army said, ‘We have attacked the entry gate of the Syrian regime’s military headquarters complex in Damascus. The army is keeping an eye on the actions being taken against Druze civilians in southern Syria.’
Syrian government media reported that on Wednesday Israel mainly targeted the city of Suwaida. This entire conflict started when government troops entered the city on Monday to suppress the fighting between Druze fighters and Bedouin armed group. But what happened was that a fight broke out between Druze fighters and government forces. There was a ceasefire between the two sides but it is being violated repeatedly.
According to local news outlet Swaida24, heavy artillery and mortar shelling was carried out on the city of Swaida and surrounding villages early Wednesday. The Syrian Defense Ministry said in a statement to the state news agency SANA that illegal groups in Swaida are violating the ceasefire.
Druze are considered Arabs and this community originated in Egypt in the 11th century. This community is in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel and its number is around 1 million. This community does not believe in Islam or Judaism but believes in a different religion which is a mixture of Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions.
About 7 lakh Druze live in Syria. Most of the Druze in the country live in Swaida. More than 29,000 Druze live in the Syrian-occupied Golan Heights. They consider themselves Syrian. Israel has several times offered Israeli citizenship to the Druze people living here, which they have rejected. There are about 150,000 people of the Druze community in Israel who have taken Israeli citizenship and they work in the Israeli army.
