Mexico’s President gave a befitting reply to Donald Trump, imposed tariff on American products

Mexico City. Mexico has responded to US President Donald Trump’s tariff by imposing tariff. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday that she has ordered her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico’s interests after the US imposed tariffs on Mexican goods. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sheinbaum stressed that her government does not want confrontation with the US but cooperation and dialogue.

Leftist leader Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly tried to calm tensions with US President Donald Trump. She praised her government’s work so far since taking over as Mexico’s president in October. Sheinbaum said that during his tenure, 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl (a type of drug) were seized, and more than 10,0000 accused associated with drug trafficking were detained.

US President Donald Trump signed new tariff orders against Mexico and China on Saturday. He declared an economic emergency to impose a 10 percent duty on all imports from China and a 25 percent duty on imports from Mexico. He also said that he would implement his promise to impose heavy duties on Canadian goods. Trump said that he has decided to impose tariffs on Mexican goods due to the Sheinbaum government’s failure to stop the smuggling of synthetic opioid fentanyl into the US and the entry of illegal immigrants.

The tariffs threaten economic deadlock with Canada and Mexico, two of America’s largest trading partners. Amid the possibility of retaliation by both countries, their decades-old trade relationship with the US could be damaged. The White House confirmed a CBC News report that the Trump administration is considering imposing a 25 percent tariff on almost all Canadian goods. At the same time, a 10 percent duty can be imposed on Canadian oil. These tariff rates are going to be effective from February 4.
