Modi 3.0 Cabinet Expansion: Youth and Women Set to Gain, Ministers Over 70 May Face Exit

New Delhi: The much-anticipated expansion of the Modi 3.0 Cabinet is expected to focus heavily on youth and women, while reducing the representation of veteran ministers. The move is aimed at giving the government a fresh look, accommodating new allies and strengthening its political equation in poll-bound states.

According to sources, the number of women ministers could rise from the current seven to at least 12, while the overall strength of the Union Council of Ministers may increase to around 75 to make room for new allies.

More Young Faces Likely

The expansion is also expected to significantly increase the number of younger ministers. At present, only 17 ministers are below the age of 50, accounting for around 24% of the Cabinet. This share could rise to nearly 40% after the reshuffle.

The government is also looking to induct at least five ministers below the age of 40, compared with just two Ministers of State in this age group at present.

Sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to finalize the expansion plan after returning from his West Asia tour on September 2. Discussions are reportedly centered on bringing in new allies, increasing youth and women’s representation, and maintaining political balance in key states heading into elections.

Ministers Over 70 Could Be Reduced

The expansion may also see a reduction in the number of senior ministers. At present, 12 ministers are over the age of 70, and sources indicate that around one-fourth of them could be dropped as part of the reshuffle.

Overall, nearly 65% of ministers are currently aged above 51. The proposed changes could bring this figure down to around 50%, giving the Cabinet a younger profile.

The challenge for the BJP-led government will be to strike a balance between experience, youth, women’s representation and alliance politics while ensuring that the reshuffle strengthens its political strategy ahead of upcoming state elections.
