
New Delhi. India is preparing to give a strong message to Pakistan on the issue of terrorism during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit to be held in China from August 31. Prime Minister Narendra Modi may mention the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the ongoing terrorism from across the border in his address. India is also trying to include this issue in the joint statement of SCO leaders.
Let us tell you that this issue was also hot in the SCO Defense Ministers’ Conference in China on 25-26 June. When this issue raised by India was not included in the joint statement, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh refused to sign it.
For the first time, the joint statement of SCO Defense Ministers was not issued. India is still firm on its stand. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the SCO was established with the primary goal of combating the three evils of terrorism, separatism and extremism. Let us tell you that India chaired the SCO in 2023. Then for the first time the SCO issued a joint statement on mutual cooperation in combating separatism, extremism and radicalism that gives rise to terrorism. India also focused on the broad and diverse areas of cooperation that are of interest to the SCO members.
SCO was established in 2001
The SCO was established in 2001 as the Shanghai-6 group, when a total of six countries, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, joined it. Before that it was in the form of Shanghai-5. India-Pak became its members in 2017.
Prime Minister has participated in many summits
Modi has participated in the summits held in Qingdao in 2018, Bishkek in 2019, Moscow (virtual) in 2020, Dushanbe (virtual) in 2021, Tashkent in 2022, New Delhi (virtual) in 2023.
There are currently 10 countries in SCO
There are currently 10 members of SCO – India, China, Iran, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan. Mongolia and Afghanistan are members. While 14 countries are dialogue partners.
