New Delhi. A group of attackers attacked and stripped a 40-year-old Indian man in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. The unknown man was falsely accused of behaving inappropriately in front of children. According to a report in The Irish Times, after the incident, officials are investigating it as a possible hate crime.
The incident took place on the evening of July 19, when the Indian national was attacked and beaten up by some youths in the suburb of Tallaght. The attackers removed his trousers before passersby rescued him. He had multiple wounds on his face, hands and feet and was bleeding.
The attackers made a false claim
According to the Garda (Irish National Police), the attackers falsely claimed that the man was behaving inappropriately around children. These claims were propagated online by prominent right-wing and anti-immigrant online accounts. However, the Garda rejected such claims of inappropriate behaviour by the man.
The injured Indian man was taken to Tallaght University Hospital, from where he was discharged on 20 July.
A police spokesperson said, “Garda in Tallaght were called to an incident on Parkhill Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, at approximately 6pm on Saturday, 19 July 2025. Garda attended the scene and a male in his 40s was taken to Tallaght University Hospital with injuries.”
According to The Irish Times, investigators said that some attackers have recently carried out unprovoked attacks on foreigners in the Tallaght area. The Garda has launched an investigation into the incident.
Justice Minister’s statement relevant
Recently, Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said that he is aware of incidents of foreign nationals being falsely accused of crimes. He said, “You have been hearing that people are blaming immigrants for crimes. All I can tell you is that I have asked for the figures and when you look at the population of prisons of people convicted of crimes, you will find that the percentage of immigrants in jail is less than the percentage of immigrants living in society.”
He further said that therefore there is no truth in the fact that immigrants are more likely to commit criminal offenses. Indian Ambassador to Ireland Akhilesh Mishra criticized the incident involving the Indian man and criticized RTE News for reporting the incident with ‘alleged attack’.
What did the eyewitnesses say?
A person present at the spot at the time of the incident claimed that he saw the Indian man being attacked. He told that the ‘racist gang’ stole his bank cards, phone, shoes and trousers. An Irish woman said the man was staying with her friend and had arrived in the country a week ago.
“I was on my way to my in-laws’ house when I saw 13 teenagers, including a woman, surrounding the man. I saw the man covered in blood from head to toe,” the woman said.
The eyewitness, who became emotional while describing the incident, said the man was embarrassed and completely shocked by what had happened to him.
