New Delhi: The DMK government in Tamil Nadu had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a SIR in the state. The Supreme Court has now agreed to hear the petition on November 11th. Senior advocate Vivek Singh, representing the DMK, requested an urgent hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, following which the bench agreed to list the petition for Tuesday.

DMK calls the SIR unconstitutional and arbitrary
DMK Organizing Secretary RS Bharathi moved the Supreme Court on November 3rd challenging the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a thorough revision of the voter list in Tamil Nadu. The DMK has described the SIR as unconstitutional, arbitrary, and a threat to democratic rights. In the petition, the DMK has sought the quashing of the Election Commission’s notification issued on November 27th to conduct the SIR. The petition said that the SIR process violates several provisions of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, including Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution.
