Washington: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has once again reacted to the claim of US President Donald Trump. Tharoor clearly said that mediation between two unequal parties is not possible. Just like no comparison can be made between terrorists and victims of terror.
Tharoor is currently leading an all-party delegation of Indian MPs in the US regarding ‘Operation Sindoor’. He made this comment in response to a question asked during a discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations on Thursday. In fact, US President Trump has been repeatedly saying that he has helped resolve the tension between India and Pakistan.
What did Tharoor say on mediation…
Tharoor said, mediation is a word that we are not particularly ready to accept. I will tell you why not. The fact is that when you use words like ‘broker’, you are talking about an equality that does not actually exist.
He said that there can be no equality between terrorists and victims of terror. Tharoor said, a country that gives safe haven to terrorism and a country that is a strong multi-party democracy and is trying to move forward through its work… there can be no comparison between the two.
Tharoor said that a country that is just trying to survive and a neighbour that wants to change the geo-political system that has been in place for the last 75 years… there can be no equality between them. In such a situation, it would be wrong to say that mediation is possible between these two unequal things.
Trump has also said that he told both nuclear-armed neighbors that if they stop fighting, America will trade with them. When Tharoor was asked how he sees the US role in this conflict, he said that to some extent we can only guess that America’s role must have been in dialogue with the parties first.
He said, our government received many high-level calls from the US government and we appreciate their views and concern. Tharoor said that America may have had similar high-level dialogue with Pakistan as well and that is probably where America’s words may have had the most impact.
Tharoor said that we believe that this was the side that needed to be convinced to stop this process. But this is just my guess. I don’t know what they told the Pakistanis.
What did Trump say to the German Chancellor now…
On Thursday, in a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office, Trump reiterated that he feels very proud that he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan. He said, I spoke to some very talented and good people from both sides. I told them that if they keep shooting at each other and keep showing nuclear weapons, then America will not do any business with them, because its effect spreads rapidly and it can affect us too.
Trump added, you know, I stopped that war… Now will I get the credit for it? I will not. They do not give me credit for anything, but no one else could have done it. I stopped it. I am very proud of that.
On 22 April, 26 tourists were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. After that, on 7 May, India started Operation Sindoor, targeting the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
After four days of intense drone and missile action, India and Pakistan agreed to end the conflict on May 10. India says the agreement was reached through talks between the Directors General of Military Operations of the armies of the two countries.
