New Delhi. A US court has given a big blow to Donald Trump. As soon as he became President, he signed an executive order to end Birthright Citizenship. By next month, there was a fear of losing American citizenship of those people who have US citizenship by birth despite their parents not being American. However, the court clearly declared Trump’s order as ‘unconstitutional’.
Four Democrat-led states had approached the court against Trump’s decision on Birthright Citizenship. After hearing the case, US District Judge John Kaufner stopped Trump from implementing this order. In an order, the court has temporarily stayed Trump’s order.
Who is affected by Donald Trump’s order?
Donald Trump’s order was to come into effect from February 20, when those who have ‘illegal’ citizenship of America would have to lose their citizenship. The order of the federal judge came on the petition of Democrat-led states and civil rights groups, which challenged Trump’s executive order. After taking oath on Monday, Donald Trump had ordered US agencies not to accept the citizenship of such children whose neither mother nor father is an American citizen.
The court considered Trump’s order against the 14th Amendment
Democratic-ruled states like Washington, Arizona, Illinois and Oregon said that Trump’s order is a violation of the rights contained in the citizenship section of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. It provides that any person born in America is a citizen of the country. He said, “This shakes my mind. This is clearly an unconstitutional order.”
