Washington: Relations between India and the US have been strained recently due to the additional tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Now, Trump has made a major statement regarding the tariffs on India. While speaking to reporters, Trump said that the current US tariffs on India are too high because India was previously buying oil from Russia.
He said that India has now reduced its oil purchases from Russia, and he has also significantly curtailed Russia’s oil trade, therefore, the tariffs on India will be reduced soon. Confirming this, Trump clearly stated that yes, we are going to reduce the tariffs on India, which we will do at any time, any day.
New Trade Agreement in the Works – Trump
On the other hand, the US President also emphasized that a new trade agreement is being prepared between the US and India, which will be very different and fairer than previous agreements. He said that currently, India doesn’t like him, but soon they will like us again. We are getting a fair and mutually beneficial trade agreement. Earlier, our deals were quite unequal, but now we are very close to a balanced deal.
Trump Praises India
Earlier, at the swearing-in ceremony of Sergio Gor, the new US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South Asia, Trump praised India. Trump said that India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the largest country, and home to more than 1.5 billion people. He said that his relationship with Prime Minister Modi is excellent, and Sergio Gor has further strengthened it.
During this time, Trump also emphasized that Gor’s job will be to strengthen strategic, economic, and security relations between the US and India. He said that Gor will help increase investment, boost US energy exports, and strengthen technological cooperation.
