September 15, 2025

Churachandpur: Violence has erupted again in the northeastern state of Manipur. On Sunday, the very next day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, the local people in Churachandpur went out of control and attacked the police station. During this, they clashed with the security forces. It is reported that the local people have also pelted stones at the Rapid Action Force personnel. In fact, two youths were detained in Churachandpur district for tearing the banners and ‘cutouts’ put up in connection with the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Sunday, the local crowd gathered demanding the release of both of them and started protesting. Soon the crowd went out of control and resorted to violence.

According to a senior security officer, the crowd also tried to attack the Churachandpur police station. Pictures from the afternoon also showed the mob pelting stones on RAF personnel on duty during the protest. The two men were later released after their bail pleas were heard by the duty magistrate, the official said.

The arrests were made on Thursday night
Several banners and cutouts put up in Pearsonmun and Fileyen Bazar to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi were torn down on the night of September 11. Several youths were detained by the police in connection with the incident. However, all were released after interrogation, while two youths were kept in custody. The mob protested near the Chudachandpur police station demanding their immediate release. After this, the protesters pelted stones on the security forces.

Situation normal after the release of both the youths
The situation could be normalized only after the police released both the youths. The police had earlier claimed that both of them had been arrested. A district police official said, “The two persons were not detained suddenly, contrary to the claim of the protesters, but were taken for questioning from the site of vandalism.”

PM Modi on Saturday visited the state for the first time since ethnic conflict broke out between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur in May 2023. Addressing a rally in Churachandpur, he promised to make the state a ‘symbol of peace’.
