New Delhi: After assuming the presidency, Donald Trump began imposing strict restrictions on the entry of citizens from several countries into the United States. Trump completely banned the entry of citizens from some countries and tightened the rules for citizens of others. Now, reactions to President Trump’s actions have begun. Two countries have banned the entry of US citizens.
Burkina Faso and Mali have banned the entry of American citizens. These two countries have taken this step in response to similar travel restrictions imposed by the Trump administration on citizens of 39 countries. The countries whose citizens are affected by Trump’s restrictions include some that have qualified for the FIFA World Cup, which is to be held in the US and Canada.
Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, clearly stated that they will apply the same rules to the entry of American citizens that the US has applied to their citizens. The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement announcing that it will apply the same conditions to the entry of American citizens into the country that the US administration has applied to the people of Mali.
Mali also expressed regret that the US made such an important decision without consultation. It is noteworthy that of the 39 countries whose citizens face complete or partial restrictions on entry into the US, 25 are African.
Countries under US restrictions
The countries whose citizens face strict restrictions and conditions on entry into the US include Syria and Palestine, as well as poor countries like Niger, Sierra Leone, and South Sudan. Partial restrictions have been imposed on citizens of Senegal and Ivory Coast. The Trump administration has stated that players for the football tournament will be granted entry, but no such assurance has been given regarding fans.
