New Delhi: Discussions between India and the United States regarding a trade deal have been ongoing for several months. US President Donald Trump has now made a significant statement on the matter, noting that India and the US are very close to reaching an agreement. However, he clarified that this deal will be quite different from those made in the past.
On Tuesday, Trump spoke to reporters about the India-US trade deal, explicitly stating that the two nations are very close to an agreement. “They want to make a deal, and we are going to make a deal. We are very close,” he said. He added, however, that this agreement would be of a very different nature compared to previous ones.
Trump’s statement comes at a time when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is on a visit to India. During this visit, the two nations have held robust discussions covering trade, energy, technology, defense, and bilateral relations. Notably, earlier this month, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal also met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss the trade deal.
In February of this year, India and the US had announced the development of a framework for the first phase of a bilateral trade deal. However, negotiations were reopened following changes to the US tariff structure.
With Trump’s latest statement, all eyes are now on the potential trade agreement between the two countries. Meanwhile, the Congress party has taken a critical stance; Congress leader T.S. Singh Deo, in a post on X, questioned why there has been no statement from the Indian side regarding the trade deal.
