A complete makeover in the works… Tata Motors gears up for the new-generation Nexon

New Delhi: The Nexon is one of the most successful products in Tata Motors’ portfolio. It is available with a variety of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric. The company is currently working on the next generation of the Nexon, which is expected to launch next year. Previously, the internal combustion engine variant of the car was spotted during testing.

New spy shots have now emerged of the electric version, indicating that the company plans to launch the model with multiple powertrain options simultaneously. It is possible that Tata will introduce both the ICE and EV versions of the new Nexon at the same time—a strategy similar to what we saw with the new Tiago.

What will be special about the new Nexon?
The next-generation Tata Nexon was recently spotted. Unlike previous test mules, these new spy shots reveal an orange wiring harness and a space for a large battery pack under the vehicle’s body—clear indicators of a high-voltage electrification system. This suggests that the spotted vehicle is likely the new Nexon EV.

The Nexon EV was first launched in 2020, and the company has since sold 100,000 units. However, its dominance in the electric vehicle market is no longer what it once was. The arrival of the next-generation model could potentially help the company regain its former standing.

The company may adopt a new platform
The new Nexon EV is expected to feature a sporty exterior, an upswept beltline, a sloping roofline, and a steeply raked rear windscreen. It will also offer high ground clearance. While the current Nexon EV comes with 16-inch wheels, the next-generation model could feature 18-inch alloy wheels. According to reports, the new Nexon could be based on the updated X1 platform.

Some reports, however, suggest that it might instead be based on a shorter version of the ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced’ platform—the same platform upon which the Sierra is based. Not much is currently known about the features of the next-generation Tata Nexon.
