
New Delhi. In Telangana, the population of Other Backward Classes, excluding Muslim minorities, is 46.25 percent, which is the largest part of the total 3.70 crore population of the state. This information has been received from a caste-based survey in the state. On the other hand, if the Backward Classes of E category i.e. minorities are also included, then this number becomes 56 percent. In terms of percentage of population, after the backward castes, there are Scheduled Castes (17.43 percent), Scheduled Tribes (10.45), Backward Classes among Muslims (10.08) and other castes (13.31), Backward Castes among Muslims (2.48).
The State Planning Department, which conducted the survey, submitted its report to the Cabinet Sub-Committee headed by State Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday. The minister said the report will be tabled before the state Cabinet on February 4. It will be taken up for debate in a special session of the Assembly on the same day.
In terms of numbers, the population of Scheduled Castes is 61,84,319, Scheduled Tribes 37,05,929, Backward Castes excluding Muslim minorities 1,64,09,179. The population of Backward Castes among Muslim minorities is 35,76,588, Muslim (OC) population is 8,80,424.
Reddy told reporters that the total Muslim percentage in the state is 12.56. The total number of houses in the state is 1,15,78,457, while the total number of houses surveyed is 1,12,15,134. Telangana provides reservation to backward Muslims in the Backward Classes category.
Reddy termed the report as historic and said that the survey covered 3,54,77,554 persons (96.9 per cent of the population). He said that 3.1 per cent of the population (16 lakh) was left out of the survey as they were either not available or did not show interest in participating in it. The minister said, “This process of preparing the report and the report itself is a historic achievement for the Telangana government, which will be recorded in the social history of the country.” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised to conduct a comprehensive socio-economic, employment, political and caste survey at the time of elections.
