New Delhi. Pakistan’s decision to close the airspace after the tension with India escalated has caused heavy losses to it. Pakistan’s Defense Ministry has revealed that it has suffered a loss of about 127 crore Indian rupees (4.10 billion Pakistani rupees) in two months due to the closure of airspace for Indian aircraft.
This information was shared in the National Assembly of Pakistan on Friday. Pakistan closed its airspace for Indian aircraft a day after India suspended the Indus Water Treaty on 23 April.
From 24 April to 30 June 2025, this move caused heavy financial losses to Pakistan. About 100-150 Indian aircraft were affected during this period. However, Pakistan’s Defense Ministry, quoted by the ‘Dawn’ newspaper, said that sovereignty and national defense are above economic interests.
Defense Minister said – National security is paramount
The Defense Ministry also said that even though there has been financial loss, the security of the country is paramount. Interestingly, despite this loss, the total revenue of Pakistan Airports Authority has increased from $ 5,08,000 in 2019 to $ 7,60,000 in 2025.
This tension between India and Pakistan started after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, for which Pakistan-based terrorist organization TRF took responsibility. After this, India reduced diplomatic relations with Pakistan before Operation Sindoor and suspended the Indus Water Treaty and banned trade.
There was a loss of $ 54 million in 2019
After this, Pakistan also closed its airspace for Indian flights in retaliation. Pakistan’s airspace is still closed for Indian aircraft and is likely to remain so till the last week of August.
Similarly, Indian airspace is also closed, on which India’s Ministry of External Affairs said, “When it comes to sovereignty and security, no price is too high.”
It is worth noting that in 2019 too, Pakistan had suffered a loss of $54 million due to the closure of its airspace due to the Indo-Pak border tension.
