Mumbai Landslide Horror: Hillside Collapses on Ghatkopar Chawl, 2 Dead and 8 Feared Trapped

Mumbai: A landslide struck Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering a major rescue operation after a portion of a hillside collapsed onto a residential chawl. Two people have died, while another six to eight are feared trapped beneath the debris.

The incident occurred around 4 am in the Chirag Nagar area of Ghatkopar, where a section of the hillside reportedly gave way and crashed onto Gausia Chawl. Several residents were caught under the debris.

Police said two bodies have been recovered so far, while several people have been rescued. However, authorities fear that six to eight people could still be trapped, prompting an intensified search and rescue operation.

NDRF, Police Teams Launch Rescue Operation
Teams from the Maharashtra Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the site. Rescue personnel are working through the debris to locate those who may still be trapped.

Ambulances have also been stationed at the spot to ensure that injured residents can be rushed to hospitals without delay.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the bodies of the two deceased were taken to a hospital. Two injured residents, identified as 18-year-old Sohail Ansari and 14-year-old Mohammad Ansari, have also been admitted for treatment.

Heavy Rainfall Suspected Behind Landslide
Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall, and the downpour is suspected to have triggered the landslide. Continuous rain has also made rescue operations more challenging as teams work to clear the debris and search for survivors.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has reached the site and is monitoring the ongoing relief and rescue efforts.

Authorities remain focused on determining whether anyone else is trapped beneath the collapsed structure as rescue operations continue.
