
Kozhikode: V Srinivasan, husband of PT Usha, the renowned ‘Flying Queen’ and president of the Indian Olympic Association and Rajya Sabha MP, passed away early Friday morning. He was 67 years old. According to family sources, Srinivasan collapsed suddenly at his residence and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save him.
A former central government employee, Srinivasan was always a strong support system for PT Usha in her sporting and political career. He was considered the strongest pillar behind Usha’s success.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to PT Usha over the phone and expressed his deep condolences on the demise of her husband. The couple has a son, Ujjwal. Srinivasan’s death has sent a wave of grief through the sports and social circles.
PT Usha married Srinivasan on April 25, 1991. Srinivasan was a CISF inspector and also a former Kabaddi player.
PT Usha became the first Indian woman to reach the final of the 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she narrowly missed a bronze medal by just 1/100th of a second. She has been awarded the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award by the Government of India.
