Dinesh Trivedi to be India’s New High Commissioner to Bangladesh

April 19, 2026

New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Dinesh Trivedi as its new High Commissioner to Bangladesh. This decision comes at a time when discussions on several key issues are ongoing between India and Bangladesh, and both nations are striving to maintain a balanced and robust relationship.

The appointment of Dinesh Trivedi—a former Union Railway Minister and senior BJP leader—is also being viewed as politically significant. Particularly in the context of West Bengal politics, this move is seen as a strategic step by the BJP, one that could potentially influence upcoming electoral dynamics.

The Journey from TMC to BJP
Dinesh Trivedi’s political career has traversed several pivotal junctures. Prior to joining the BJP, he was a prominent leader within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and served as the Railway Minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government as part of the TMC’s quota. However, he subsequently distanced himself from the TMC and formally joined the BJP in 2021.

  • New Appointment and Diplomatic Shift
Dinesh Trivedi will now assume the responsibilities of India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, succeeding Pranay Verma. Meanwhile, Pranay Verma is being transferred to Brussels, where he will take charge as India’s Ambassador to the European Union. This reshuffle is considered an integral part of India’s diplomatic strategy.

Bangladesh’s Politics and Relations with India
Political shifts in Bangladesh over recent years have had a tangible impact on its relations with India. Following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from power, a new government was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus. During this period, incidents of violence against the Hindu community came to light, leading to increased tension in bilateral relations. However, following the recently concluded general elections, the elevation of Tarique Rahman to the post of Prime Minister has signaled a renewed improvement in India-Bangladesh relations.

Ministerial Roles and Controversies in the UPA Government
During the UPA regime, in addition to serving as the Railway Minister, Dinesh Trivedi also held the portfolio of Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. However, in 2012, a proposal to hike passenger fares during the Railway Budget sparked a major political controversy. Mamata Banerjee strongly opposed this decision, and ultimately, Trivedi was compelled to resign from his post. Subsequently, Mukul Roy was appointed as the Railway Minister in his place.

Entry into the BJP and the Bengal Elections
Dinesh Trivedi resigned from the TMC on February 12, 2021, and joined the BJP on March 6, 2021. Assembly elections were also held in West Bengal that same year, during which several TMC leaders defected to the BJP. However, the BJP managed to win only 77 seats, and Mamata Banerjee once again assumed the office of Chief Minister.

    Who is Dinesh Trivedi?
Born on June 4, 1950, Dinesh Trivedi served as a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal from 2009 to 2019. Additionally, he has also served as a Rajya Sabha MP during the periods of 1990–96 and 2002–08. His political experience and administrative acumen are now poised to play a significant role in his capacity as India’s representative in Bangladesh.
