US Navy Seizes Iranian-Flagged Ship in the Strait of Hormuz

April 20, 2026

Washington: Amidst the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the US Navy has seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel. This cargo ship had attempted to breach the US naval blockade near Hormuz.

  • In a post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump claimed that the Iranian-flagged cargo ship in question is named TOUSKA. The vessel was intercepted in the Gulf of Oman by the US Navy destroyer USS Spruance. The ship was attempting to run the blockade—and that did not end well for them (Iran).

Trump asserted that the Iranian vessel ignored warnings issued by the US Navy, after which it was forcibly halted. US Marines currently have full custody of the ship. “We have complete control over the vessel.” This ship has previously been involved in illicit activities. “We are currently inspecting its contents.”

Iran has also issued a response regarding the US Navy’s action. Tehran stated that the US act of “maritime piracy” would be met with a swift response. Iran alleged that the US Navy violated the ceasefire by opening fire on its vessel. The ship was en route from China to Iran. Following the US action, US military vessels were targeted in an attack carried out by Iranian drones.

This action by the United States took place just prior to the scheduled talks in Islamabad, making it a highly significant development. A US delegation is traveling there for the negotiations; however, Iran has refused to attend. Iran maintains that excessive US demands, frequent shifts in stance, and contradictory statements are responsible for the current situation. Meanwhile, Trump has made it clear that the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz will remain in effect until a deal satisfactory to the US is reached with Iran. However, Iran states that if the US naval blockade of its ports continues, it will also take retaliatory action. According to the Foreign Ministry, if the targeting of Iran’s economic interests and ports does not cease, they will adopt a tougher stance in their diplomacy. Meanwhile, the French shipping company CMA CGM has confirmed that one of its vessels came under fire in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.
