Office Romance Survey Goes Viral: 40% of People Admitted to Cheating on Their Partners

May 09, 2026

New Delhi: Office romance is no longer just a plotline confined to movies. In a setting where individuals spend approximately nine hours of their day, developing an emotional attachment to someone is considered a common occurrence. However, a survey that recently surfaced presents some truly startling findings.

According to the report, more than 60 percent of people have been involved in some form of romantic relationship within their workplace. Factors such as long office hours, working closely together on a daily basis, and finding a companion who understands the pressures of the profession lead many to find partners right within their own offices. This survey by Forbes has gone viral, with people actively sharing their own personal experiences regarding the matter.

According to the survey, 65 percent of respondents stated that feeling “comfortable” is the primary reason for engaging in an office relationship. Meanwhile, 61 percent noted that they simply do not have the time to meet new people outside of the office. Interestingly, only 38 percent of people acknowledged that office romance makes work more enjoyable; this suggests that for the majority, emotional understanding and connection hold greater significance.

  • The Overriding Fear of a Breakup
However, the impact of these relationships is not limited solely to one’s personal life. Many respondents admitted that the fear of a breakup is significantly higher in office relationships, as one may be forced to face that very same person on a daily basis. Approximately 54 percent of people reported that dating within the office negatively impacted their work-life balance.

The survey also revealed that office romances rarely remain a secret for long. More than half of the respondents stated that their colleagues’ behavior changed once their relationship became public knowledge. Furthermore, about 60 percent acknowledged that office affairs frequently become the subject of workplace gossip.

40% of Those in Office Relationships Admitted to Cheating
Perhaps the most shocking revelation in the report was that 40 percent of individuals involved in office relationships admitted to cheating on their partners with a colleague. Conversely, there was also a group—comprising 43 percent of respondents—who ultimately went on to marry their office partners.

According to a survey, many companies are now attempting to manage office romances rather than deeming them entirely inappropriate. Approximately 62 percent of respondents reported that they had disclosed details of their relationships to HR.
