“Where Has the Tax Been Imposed? It Has Been Removed”: BJP Leader’s UPI Remark Goes Viral

Kanpur: A video featuring Ramkishore Sahu, BJP’s Kanpur-Bundelkhand Regional President, has gone viral amid the ongoing debate over proposed charges on certain UPI payments above ₹2,000.

In the video, Sahu was asked about the proposed UPI charges. Responding to the question, he said, “It has been removed; where has the tax been imposed? It wasn’t imposed yesterday; it was removed.”

His remarks have sparked discussion on social media, particularly as the proposed merchant-side fee on higher-value UPI transactions remains a subject of political and business debate.

    The video shows Sahu being questioned about the proposed charges on commercial UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. Sahu denied that a charge had been imposed, saying, “It has been removed.” He repeated his response, stating, “It wasn’t imposed yesterday; it was removed.” The remarks are now being widely circulated online, with the video drawing attention to the BJP leader’s understanding of the UPI fee issue.

    The controversy comes a day after the Congress’s Kanpur city unit, along with local shopkeepers, staged a protest at Shivala Market against the proposed UPI charges. The protesters demanded that the proposed fee be withdrawn. Traders’ associations have also raised concerns about its potential impact on businesses.

    Traders Raise Concerns Over Impact
    Gyanesh Mishra, State President of the Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal, claimed that the proposed measure could affect around 10 crore retail traders across India, including approximately 5 lakh traders in Kanpur. As the debate over UPI charges continues, Sahu’s remark—“Where has the tax been imposed?”—has become a focal point of discussion, with the accompanying video spreading across social media.
