New Delhi: Indian cinema has lost one of its most distinctive and powerful performers. Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar passed away at the age of 75 on Thursday, October 8, 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa.

According to reports, Patekar was found unconscious at his home and was rushed to Manipal Hospital. Doctors attempted to revive him for around 45 minutes, but he could not be saved. He was declared dead at approximately 5:20 AM. His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the news.

The sudden demise of the veteran actor has sent shockwaves across Bollywood and Marathi cinema. Tributes have begun pouring in from the film fraternity, political leaders and fans, who are mourning the loss of an actor whose intense performances and unmistakable dialogue delivery made him a household name.

  • Nana Patekar No More: A Sudden Loss for Indian Cinema

Patekar remained active in the entertainment industry even in his later years. His recent work included the film O’Romeo, and he continued to maintain a strong connection with cinema and public life. His last known public appearance was at an event in Goa on October 4, just days before his death.

The news is particularly shocking because Patekar continued to remain active and visible. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career spanning theatre, Hindi cinema, Marathi cinema and filmmaking.

A Career Built on Powerful Performances

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, Nana Patekar began his journey in theatre before entering films. He made his cinematic debut with Gaman in 1978 and gradually established himself as one of India’s most respected character actors.

His performances in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Tirangaa, Khamoshi: The Musical, Apaharan, Welcome, Raajneeti and Natsamrat showcased his extraordinary range.

Whether playing a ruthless antagonist, a serious dramatic character or a comic role such as Uday Shetty in Welcome, Patekar brought a distinctive intensity and authenticity to every performance.

His work earned him multiple major honours, including National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards. He was also conferred the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to Indian cinema.

Nana Patekar as Director and Writer

Patekar’s contribution to cinema extended beyond acting. He made his directorial debut with Prahaar: The Final Attack in 1991, a film centred on the lives and struggles of soldiers.

He also remained closely associated with theatre and was known for expressing strong views on social issues.

    Personal Life and Family

Nana Patekar was married to Neelakanti Patekar, whom he met through the Marathi theatre circuit. The couple had two sons, although their first child tragically died at a very young age.

Their younger son, Malhar Patekar, has also worked in the film industry, including as an assistant director.

Patekar was known to be deeply attached to his mother, Nirmala Patekar, who died in 2019 at the age of 99.

    A Legacy Beyond Cinema

Nana Patekar’s contribution went far beyond films. He was actively involved in social work and worked to support farmers and families affected by drought in Maharashtra through the Naam Foundation, an organisation he co-founded.

His combination of cinematic brilliance, social commitment and an uncompromising personality made him a singular figure in Indian public life.

With his death, Indian cinema has lost an actor whose voice, expressions and unforgettable performances left an indelible mark on generations of audiences.

Nana Patekar may be gone, but the characters he brought to life—and the intensity with which he played them—will continue to live on in Indian cinema.
