New Delhi: Leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Delhi Police, demanding a date for their proposed protest at Jantar Mantar. The party has warned that it will launch another protest if permission is not granted within the stipulated time.
CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka announced on Sunday that he, along with co-convenor Sourav Das, legal head Ratna Singh and other party leaders, would visit the Parliament Street Police Station at 10 AM on Monday to seek clarity on the proposed demonstration.
In a post on social media platform X, Ranka said the police must provide a date for the peaceful protest within 24 hours, warning that the party would otherwise issue another call for demonstrations.
The CJP had planned to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The party has alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
However, before the planned demonstration, CJP founder Abhijit Dipke and co-convenors Ashutosh Ranka and Sourav Das were detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai. The leaders alleged that they were forcibly deplaned and taken into custody without being given a written explanation for their detention.
The three leaders were released on Sunday after being produced before an executive magistrate. Following their release, they further alleged that their mobile phones had been confiscated during detention and that they had been prevented from consulting legal counsel.
Ranka compared the developments to the Emergency era, alleging that train services had been cancelled and protesters harassed to stop them from reaching the national capital.
CJP leaders also accused the government of turning their campaign against the Election Commission into a confrontation with the ruling party. They maintained that the proposed protest was intended to raise concerns over electoral processes and vowed to continue their campaign.
The party’s next move will depend on the response it receives from Delhi Police regarding permission for the proposed Jantar Mantar demonstration.
