BCCI’s Major Decision: The Ajit Agarkar Era to Continue Until the 2027 ODI World Cup

New Delhi: A major decision regarding Indian cricket is expected to be announced soon. There is a strong possibility that Ajit Agarkar will receive an extension as the Chief Selector. While his current contract is set to expire in June 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in favor of retaining him in this role for the foreseeable future.

According to sources, the Board’s focus is now squarely on the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup; with this objective in mind, the decision to grant Agarkar an extension is considered all but certain.

The Board views Agarkar’s tenure as highly successful. Under his leadership, Team India has consistently delivered stellar performances in major tournaments. India has clinched prestigious titles such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Furthermore, the team reached the final of the 2023 ICC World Cup.

Sources also noted that Agarkar’s tenure has witnessed a smooth transition within Team India. In addition to striking a balance between senior and young players, several bold and significant decisions were taken regarding team selection, which provided the squad with a new direction.

The Board believes that Agarkar’s strategic vision and selection policies have played a pivotal role in fostering the team’s ‘fearless approach’ and ensuring its sustained success. It is for this very reason that the BCCI is now fully prepared to extend his contract.

If this decision is officially ratified, the reins of Team India’s selection policy will once again remain firmly in the hands of Ajit Agarkar leading up to the 2027 World Cup. As for Agarkar himself, he assumed the role of Chief Selector for the Indian team in July 2023. He is also a former international cricketer who represented India in Tests, ODIs, and T20 matches.
