BJP Governments Tighten Stance on Fuel Conservation; Major Decisions Implemented in Five States Following PM Modi’s Appeal

New Delhi: Amidst the country’s escalating energy crisis and rising international tensions, both the Central and State governments now appear to be taking proactive measures regarding fuel conservation. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve petrol and diesel, several BJP-ruled states have begun implementing this initiative as a concerted campaign. From reducing government convoys to promoting carpooling and online meetings, several significant decisions have been taken.

The governments in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat have issued directives at various levels. The objective of these measures is to reduce fuel consumption and prepare for potential future crises.

Directives for Limited Vehicle Usage in Delhi

In Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has decided to limit the use of vehicles within government departments. Ministers, MLAs, and officials will now utilize the minimum number of vehicles strictly according to their requirements. Additionally, directives have been issued to prioritize carpooling and public transportation.


  • Reduction in CM’s Convoy in Rajasthan

    Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has ordered a reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy. While banning the use of superfluous vehicles, he has also advised all officials and elected representatives to embrace simplicity and conserve fuel.

    Decision to Reduce Vehicles by Up to 50% in UP

    In Uttar Pradesh, taking a major step, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued directives to reduce the number of vehicles in the convoys of the Chief Minister and other ministers by up to 50 percent. Furthermore, emphasis has been placed on promoting the use of the Metro, buses, CNG vehicles, electric vehicles, bicycles, and carpooling. The government has also advised prioritizing online meetings and implementing a “Work from Home” policy for two days a week in certain institutions to minimize travel and facilitate fuel conservation.

    Emphasis on Simplicity in Madhya Pradesh

    Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has reduced the number of vehicles in his official convoy from 13 to 8. He stated that conserving petrol and diesel is essential in the national interest. Additionally, ministers and office-bearers of various corporations and boards have been urged to embrace simplicity.

    Foreign Tours Cancelled in Gujarat
    In Gujarat, Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi cancelled his scheduled visit to the United States following the Prime Minister’s appeal. This move is being viewed as a demonstration of the government’s seriousness regarding the fuel conservation and simplicity campaign.

    Suggestions Such as ‘No Vehicle Day’ Also Under Discussion
    In several states, suggestions such as implementing a ‘No Vehicle Day,’ promoting public transportation, and optimizing the utilization of school buses are now being actively considered. Furthermore, plans to stagger office start times are also being discussed with the aim of reducing traffic congestion and fuel consumption.
