He also previously served as the governor of Telangana. Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana. He is a former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha MP and has been active in Indian politics for a long time. Nand Kishore Yadav has also been appointed as the Governor of Nagaland. Former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu was appointed the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on Thursday. He replaces VK Saxena, who has now been appointed the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Sandhu, 63, is a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and is considered an expert on US-related matters. He served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024.
He has previously held several important positions at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC. He served as Deputy Chief of Mission from 2013 to 2017, and as First Secretary (Political) from 1997 to 2000, responsible for coordination with the US Congress. He also served at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations from 2005 to 2009.
Contested the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
Sandhu contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the Amritsar seat, but lost. His predecessor, V.K. Saxena, served as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for nearly four years. After assuming office on May 26, 2022, he stated that he would be actively involved in the city’s streets rather than confined to the Raj Bhavan. During his tenure, the G20 was also successfully hosted in the capital. However, this period also saw several clashes with the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi over administrative and policy issues.
