New Delhi. The situation between Washington and Tehran is tense. Meanwhile, Iranian state television has added fuel to the fire. Iranian state television broadcast what appeared to be a direct threat against US President Donald Trump, using images from an assassination attempt at a 2024 election rally.
According to foreign media reports, Iranian state TV broadcast a picture of Trump from an election rally held in Butler, Pennsylvania in July 2024, where he narrowly escaped being shot. Along with the image, a message was displayed that read: “This time it (the bullet) will not miss its target.”
This broadcast represents one of the most overt threats issued by Tehran against the US president, coming at a time when Trump is reportedly considering military action against Iran. Iranian officials have accused Washington of using internal unrest in the country as justification for potential intervention.
This threat follows claims that the United States has begun redeploying its forces in the region, including reports of troop movements from its largest military base in the Middle East. There are fears that Iran could retaliate if an attack occurs. This decision comes after a senior official in Tehran referenced a retaliatory attack that took place in June 2025 at Al Udeid Air Base outside Doha, Qatar.
Trump warns of strong response
Speaking in an interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Trump said the United States would respond forcefully if Iran escalates its crackdown on protesters. Referring to reports of executions, Trump said, “If they do something like that, we will take strong action. When they start killing thousands of people – and now you’re telling me about executions – then we’ll see what effect that has on them.” Iranian officials have dismissed the comments as a pretext for military intervention, as protests continue within the country. Eyewitnesses returning from Iran have described heavy security deployments in parts of Tehran and clashes between protesters and police.
The Iranian leadership, headed by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is already under strain following recent regional conflicts and domestic unrest. The protests began in December when the Iranian rial plummeted to a record low, exacerbating the difficulties faced by Iran, which is already struggling under sanctions, primarily related to its nuclear program.
A human rights activist news agency reported that more than 2,400 of those killed were protesters, while 147 were affiliated with the government. The group said that more than 18,400 people have been detained. On Wednesday, the Iranian government held a mass funeral for 100 security personnel killed in the protests. Thousands attended the ceremony, waving Iranian flags and pictures of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
