LPG Subsidy Check Turns Into ₹100 Crore Shock! Bengal Woman’s Bank Account Frozen After Mysterious Windfall

August 03, 2026

Kolkata: What began as a routine visit to check an LPG subsidy turned into an unbelievable experience for a woman in West Bengal after she discovered nearly ₹100 crore had been credited to her bank account.

The unusual incident took place in South 24 Parganas, where 36-year-old Kashmira Sheikh visited her bank to confirm whether her LPG subsidy had been deposited. Instead, bank officials informed her that ₹99,99,99,997 had been credited to her account, leaving her and her family in complete disbelief.

  • Kashmira, who earns a living through zari (gold thread) embroidery, and her husband, a tailor, were stunned by the unexpected balance. However, their surprise quickly turned into anxiety when they learned that the money could not be withdrawn. The bank immediately froze the account while investigating the source of the massive deposit. Notably, this was the family’s only bank account.

Preliminary findings suggest the incident was not isolated. Authorities believe a technical server glitch may have caused erroneous high-value credits to multiple accounts across West Bengal.

In another similar case, Nupur Gupta, an employee at a cloud kitchen in Kolkata’s Beleghata area, reportedly found ₹47 crore credited to her bank account. The incident has prompted a joint investigation involving the bank, police, and the Income Tax Department.

According to media reports, officials from Punjab National Bank (PNB) have confirmed that the matter is under investigation. However, the bank has not yet issued an official public statement explaining the cause of the erroneous transactions.
