Major Political Turmoil in Britain: PM Keir Ready to Step Down… Resignation Expected Soon

May 17, 2026

London. Amidst major political upheaval in Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has signaled his readiness to step down from his post. According to reports, he has confided in his close associates that he is prepared to tender his resignation. One report suggests that Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to determine his next course of action on his own terms; he will personally decide when to submit his resignation.

Why is Keir Starmer’s Government in Jeopardy?
According to sources, the UK’s Labour government is currently grappling with a series of crises. Public confidence in the administration has waned significantly. Following the appearance of Labour Party figure Peter Mandelson’s name in the “Epstein Files,” public trust in the party eroded, leading to a crushing defeat for Labour in recent local elections. Consequently, pressure on Keir Starmer to resign has intensified.

  • Regional elections were held across Britain on Thursday. These elections took place across 136 constituencies. According to the final results, the Labour Party lost approximately 1,200 of the more than 2,200 council seats it previously held. The right-wing ‘Reform UK’ party emerged as the clear victor, securing nearly 1,400 seats.

It is worth noting that more than 80 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Labour Party itself have publicly urged him to step down. Furthermore, reports surfaced recently regarding the resignation of three members of the government.

The Nigel Farage-led Reform UK party is being hailed as the biggest winner of these elections. According to Sky News, the party has secured 1,422 seats to date. The Labour Party holds second place with 980 seats, while the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party rank third and fourth, with 834 and 754 seats respectively. Plaid Cymru—a center-left party committed to Welsh independence—has emerged as the largest party in the Welsh Senedd, securing 43 seats. Reform UK holds second place with 34 seats, while the Labour Party trails far behind in third place with just nine seats. Having been in power in Wales for 27 years, the Labour Party had already conceded defeat.

    Starmer Refused to Resign
Meanwhile, in Scotland, the Scottish National Party won the highest number of seats—58—though it fell short of the 65 seats required to secure a majority. Labour and Reform UK are tied with 17 seats each, while the Conservative Party’s seat count dropped to 12. Despite the disappointing results for his party, Starmer refused to resign, stating that he would not back down or plunge the country into chaos.
