Imphal. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended for 5 days in five districts of Manipur – Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching from 11:45 pm on Saturday. This decision has been taken in view of the tense situation after the arrest of Meitei community leader Arambai Tenggol.
The order issued by Home Department Secretary N Ashok Kumar said that this decision has been taken in an emergency situation without prior notice, so that any kind of rumor or provocation can be prevented. It has also been made clear in the order that strict legal action will be taken against those who violate this instruction.
In fact, massive protests started in Imphal East and West districts late on Saturday night when Arambai Tenggol was arrested. After this, the administration decided to suspend internet services to bring the situation under control and curb rumors. Along with this, the administration has appealed to the public to maintain peace and not trust any misleading information.
According to the news agency, protests broke out in some areas of Imphal, the capital of Manipur, on Saturday night when news came that Arambai Tenggol had been arrested. According to reports, people in Kwakaithel and Uripok areas demonstrated by burning tires and old furniture on the streets and demanded the release of the arrested leader. Additional security forces have been deployed by the administration to control the situation. However, it has not been clarified by the administration yet who is the arrested person and what charges have been leveled against him.
